Warning: Rant ahead!
What is with people in my neighborhood? Why must they blind me with their highbeams when I'm out walking the dog? Why can't they just slow down (at least to the speed limit), move over a little and let me walk in peace?
Now you see, my dear sweet blind dog, Uno, loves his evening walk around the neighborhood. He sits by the door from the time I leave for work in the morning to the time I get home from school in the evening just so he won't miss his walk. My diet likes this walk idea too. So between the 2 of them I've gotten into quite a habbit of taking an evening walk. I've even started to enjoy it - right up until we meet the first moving car of the evening.
In my neighborhood there are no side walks, so I walk in the street. At least the streets are nice and wide. Not that you would notice from the way people drive. Apparently it is against the law to move out of your lane (which aren't even marked) to give a walker a little more room. On top of that, if the walker is facing you should turn on your high beams and speed up.
I'm not trying to be demanding, but I just don't see how they can possibly think this increases the safety of the situation (I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that they are trying to make things safer). Really though, if you have your head lights on at all, I can see you. If I happen to be doing something stupid like standing in the middle of the road - flashing your high beams at me is a good idea. But don't - DO NOT - turn them on and leave them that way. It does not make you easier to see, it makes you harder to see. It even makes it harder for me to see my dog (who can't see you in any case so don't think he's going to keep things safe).
So if any of you happen to be driving in my neighborhood this evening when I take Uno out, please don't blind me - at least one of us needs to be able to see where we are going.
