Before anyone gets upset I would like to point out that this was the child's idea, it was only for one day, and it was for a good cause.
Now for the whole story. This weekend sweetie and I went to the service auction at FUS. As new members we are trying to get our faces known among the congregation and it looked like a fun way to do so. Not to mention we'd both entered items in the auction to help with the fund raising (and to get free advertising for our businesses).
We've joined a very creative society. There were some fairly standard auction items - prints of famous paintings, hand crafted scarves (and hats, and mittens and sweaters). Some slightly less standard options - babysitting, custom jewelry (my offer), finger labrynths, theatre tickets, gardening help, cleaning help. And then there were the truly fun offerings - Dinners and parties mostly - which were auctioned off by the "seat", that is they would bid the price per seat up and then let people decide how many of the offered seats they wanted to pay for that the bid up price. One party for 10 people with a home cooked lobster dinner went for $90/ person. All 10 seats were bought quickly.
The best item though was a child. A 10 year old to be precise. This child offered himself for a day. The winner would get to have this child with them for a day of their choosing, but would have to provide transportation, food and pay for any activities. Even with all of that, he went for $40. I think this kid is on to something.
It's probably illegal to auction your own off, huh? Guess I'll have to think of something else :)
